Japanese Bass Fishing Tournaments – Unique Styles and Innovations

Hello everyone overseas!
Today I’d like to share a bit about bass tournaments here in Japan.

Just like in the U.S., we do have events with big fiberglass bass boats. But Japan has also developed its own unique style of tournaments—built around small boats. Because many of our reservoirs do not allow gas-powered engines, tournaments are often run using only electric motors.

Over time, a whole range of special gear has evolved to make this style possible, for example:

Adapters for mounting electric motors on tiny boats

Custom stands to hold large fishfinders on cramped decks

Bolt-on decks to flatten the bumpy floor of small boats

Livewells made by modifying food-grade coolers

These are items you probably won’t find in the U.S., and they keep getting more advanced every year. Imagine having to carry one of those heavy electric motors back and forth every single time—hard to believe, right?

As one of the tackle shops most deeply involved in Japan’s tournament scene, I’ll keep sharing more stories and insights about how bass fishing here has evolved. Stay tuned!
